Overview

Typing Lithuanian on iOS means digging ą, č, ę and the other six native letters out of long-press menus on a keyboard designed for English. VSKS is a dedicated Lithuanian keyboard for iPhone that puts every native letter where your thumb expects it, in a layout that feels like the system keyboard.

The Challenge

• Make all nine Lithuanian characters reachable without hunting through menus
• Match the responsiveness and feel of the system keyboard inside the strict memory and CPU limits iOS puts on keyboard extensions
• Earn trust: a keyboard sees everything you type, so restraint and transparency are part of the product

Lessons Learned

1. Keyboard extensions are hostile territory: iOS imposes brutal memory and CPU limits, and engineering within them is the real work
2. Serve an underserved niche well and it spreads on its own: a small language community turned out to be the best distribution channel we never paid for
